Indigenous Lawyer: Independently Investigate Dom Phillips & Bruno Pereira Murder in Brazil's Amazon

Fri, 08/12/2022 - 12:00
We speak with Indigenous lawyer Eliesio Marubo in Brasília, about calls to independently investigate the murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and Indigenous advocate Bruno Pereira. When they went missing in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, he helped to coordinate a search-and-rescue mission. He went to Washington, D.C., to coordinate support for the investigation and to raise awareness for the safety of the Indigenous communities, and coordinated a public letter signed by 23 congressmembers that read in part: “This human-level tragedy is a symptom of a broader assault on the Amazon rainforest, which is pushing the vast ecosystem to an ecological tipping point.”

"My Boy Will Die of Sorrow": Efrén Olivares on His Memoir of Family Separation Under Trump & Beyond

Wed, 08/10/2022 - 12:00
About 400 children who were separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border under Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy have been reunited with their parents by a Biden administration task force. At least 1,000 families of at least 5,000 who were impacted remain separated. In an in-depth interview, attorney Efrén Olivares discusses some of the families he represented who were separated at the height of the crisis, when he was an attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project in McAllen, Texas. He is now deputy legal director at the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice Project. His new book is My Boy Will Die of Sorrow: A Memoir of Immigration from the Front Lines. Olivares also describes immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager and being apart from his father in that process, and the long history of U.S. immigration policy and family separation.

Sandy Hook & the Battle for Truth: Alex Jones Spread Lies from 2012 Massacre to 2020 Election, Jan. 6

Tue, 08/09/2022 - 12:00
In an extended interview with New York Times reporter Elizabeth Williamson, author of “Sandy Hook: An American Tragedy and the Battle for Truth,” she discusses covering the latest trial of right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the significance of his text messages being turned over to the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, and how he helped to shape the Republican Party and to lay the groundwork for the GOP’s widespread embrace of Trump’s big lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Williamson interviewed Jones for her book. After Jones spread the lie that the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax, “it went from there to Pizzagate to QAnon to Charlottesville and the 'Great Replacement' theory … to coronavirus myths, the 'Stop the Steal' lie, and then ultimately the violence at the Capitol on January 6,” Williamson says. “Alex Jones has his fingerprints on pretty much all those theories … that have circulated in the decade since.”
