Wife Of Ex-Cop Charged With George Floyd’s Death Files For Divorce

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 17:09

The wife of the ex-cop who was fired and arrested for the death of George Floyd has reportedly filed for divorce.

Kellie Chauvin, wife of ex-officer Derek Chauvin, said through attorneys that she was planning a “dissolution of her marriage” over the incident, Fox35 Orlando reported.

“She is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death,” a statement reportedly on behalf of Kellie and her family said, according to Fox. “Her utmost sympathy lies with his family, his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving.”

“She has filed for dissolution of her marriage, ” the statement continued.

Fox35 further reported that Kellie doesn’t have any children from her current marriage to Derek, but it is unclear how long the couple has been married.

Derek Chauvin was one of four officers fired for the altercation that led to Floyd’s death. Floyd was being questioned about allegedly using fake money when officers surrounded him. The incident was eventually filmed, showing Floyd on the ground with Chauvin’s knee pressed to his neck for nearly nine minutes. All the while, Floyd can be heard saying “I can’t breathe.” He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The death occurred on May 25. Chauvin on Friday was arrested and charged with 3rd-degree murder and manslaughter charges. CNN reported Saturday that Chauvin’s bail was set at $500,000, according to the criminal complaint filed against him in the 4th Judicial District Court of Minnesota.

“According to the document, there have been no conditions set for his release,” CNN reported. “The document doesn’t indicate that Chauvin is out on bail, but it does say that if he does bond out, bail is set for $500,000. The order of detention box is not checked because Chauvin was not ordered detained or remanded.”

The New York Post reported that “Chauvin had 18 prior complaints filed against him with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Internal Affairs,” prior to Floyd’s death.

In response to the police-involved death of Floyd, riots have broken out across the country, most notably in Minneapolis, Atlanta, New York City, and Washington, D.C., where demonstrators have burned cars and buildings and damaged and looted local businesses.

The Daily Wire reported that rioters attack a Fox News crew Friday night with bottles, even stealing the reporter’s microphone and throwing it at him. CNN’s Atlanta Headquarters had windows smashed and its sign spray-painted as protesters climbed on the building while waving Black Lives Matter flags. A CNN crew was also mistakenly arrested in Minneapolis while covering the riots. The network continues to maintain that the protests are peaceful, even as its own reporters are attacked.

Fox News released statements of support for the CNN employees who have been harmed but CNN has not done the same for Fox.

ERICKSON: The President Needs To Focus On Reelection

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 17:00

In May of 2001, a young congressional staffer went missing in Washington, D.C. Her name was Chandra Levy. She had been murdered in a park in Washington, and her remains were not found until a year later.

During the course of the investigation, the Washington police discovered Levy might have been having an affair with then California Rep. Gary Condit. Media speculation went rampant, especially after Levy’s body was found in 2002 — a midterm election year. Condit went on to lose his race.

A few months after Levy died, a young woman working in the Fort Walton Beach, Florida, office of then Rep. Joe Scarborough fell over dead in his office. On July 20, 2001, Lori Klausutis’ body was found. She had fallen over, struck her head and died. The coroner determined she had an undiagnosed heart condition, which had caused her to collapse.

As Americans headed into the 2002 election , political tempers began to flare, and with speculation on Gary Condit, some left-wing activists wanted a “whataboutism” to combat the attention. They settled on Joe Scarborough and Lori Klausutis.

As Scarborough’s career in the media rose, the fever swamps of the left got louder. The left-wing activists such as Daily Kos, a pretty establishment website for left-wing activists, let the rumors about Scarborough fly. Propagandist and noted communist sympathizer Michael Moore even registered a website domain to promote the conspiracy that Scarborough was a murderer.

Over the years, the allegations went away. They resurfaced in 2009 as an immigrant from Central America was figured for killing Chandra Levy. Then they went away again. They have resurfaced with President Donald Trump.

I don’t really care what you think about Joe Scarborough, but no American deserves to have the President of the United States targeting him with accusations of murder. No American deserves the President of the United States tweeting out salacious and unproven accusations suggesting murder and conspiracy. The deceased’s family does not deserve it. Her widower does not deserve it. The fact that President Trump does not seem to understand that should bother every one of us.

There’s no whataboutism here. There’s no “two can play that game.” There’s no decency in this. If you really think these sorts of things are justified, you are no better than the people you hate. You have become what you hate. The President, in doing this, has become no better than the Michael Moores of the world.

It is shameful and gross.

Concurrent to all of this is a growing panic in several swing states that the President is falling behind Joe Biden. The Trump campaign was attempting a Bush versus Kerry approach to 2020, seeking to define Biden in the time leading up to the Democratic National Convention. But the Trump team has now taken a very undisciplined approach of throwing everything out to see what sticks. There is no comprehensive or overarching narrative and theme about Biden.

Some Republican leaders are privately concerned the President’s team is painting a rosier picture for the President than reality presently suggests. Outside groups have been reiterating that key constituencies the President needs for his reelection are starting to drift away. They are not, thankfully, beyond reach, but the President’s team does not seem to have a good strategy to get them back.

Combine the polling and the President’s sudden infatuation with old left-wing conspiracies, and it seems the President is more focused on score-settling than winning reelection. That should bother the President’s supporters. Joe Scarborough is not on the ballot. Joe Biden is.

Last week, the President spent his time focused on resurrecting old conspiracies that accused an innocent man of murder while dredging up the pain of loss for a dead woman’s family. He should have focused on a man who could fill seats on the Supreme Court and who is ahead in most polls in the swing states the President needs to win.

KNOWLES: Cheers For Zuckerberg: Facebook Defends Free Speech

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 16:51

Even the storm cloud of social media censorship has a silver lining: Mark Zuckerberg is defending free expression.

As Twitter twit Jack Dorsey presumes to censor both the President of the United States and the official White House account, the Facebook CEO decided to take a different tack. Zuckerberg explained that, while he does not agree with much of President Donald Trump’s rhetoric, he does not believe that tech billionaire oligarchs ought to be the arbiters of truth in the public square. In Zuckerberg’s own words:

I’m responsible for reacting not just in my personal capacity but as the leader of an institution committed to free expression. I know many people are upset that we’ve left the President’s posts up, but our position is that we should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies. We looked very closely at the post that discussed the protests in Minnesota to evaluate whether it violated our policies. Although the post had a troubling historical reference, we decided to leave it up because the National Guard references meant we read it as a warning about state action, and we think people need to know if the government is planning to deploy force. Our policy around incitement of violence allows discussion around state use of force, although I think today’s situation raises important questions about what potential limits of that discussion should be. The President later posted again, saying that the original post was warning about the possibility that looting could lead to violence. We decided that this post, which explicitly discouraged violence, also does not violate our policies and is important for people to see.

Conservatives have rightly questioned Facebook‘s commitment to permitting the free exchange of ideas on its platform. I myself did so just a few weeks ago after Facebook announced the first members of its disconcerting Independent Oversight Board. But we must give credit where credit is due, and Zuckerberg‘s defense of free expression comes as a breath of fresh air when so many of his Silicon Valley peers and rivals have chosen to clamp down on speech that contradict the Left’s orthodoxy and threaten its agenda.

Zuckerberg’s decision may also save social media after President Trump’s recent executive order directing the federal agencies to revoke privileges and liability protections granted by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act from technology companies that behave like politically biased publishers rather than neutral platforms.

Twitter’s selective censorship of conservatives fits that description, as do the actions of Google and YouTube, who may be the worst offenders of all. Revocation of those protections would instantly open the tech giants up to lawsuits that would bankrupt them.

Facebook has also demonstrated bias at times, but conservatives ought to be careful not to paint with too broad a brush in our condemnation of Big Tech. Section 230 allowed the Internet to expand and develop as it did. We the people have enjoyed that growth. We enjoy social media. But we cannot allow a handful of politically biased billionaires to unfairly manipulate the flow of speech and information in our public square.

In a republic such as ours, speech is politics; politics is speech. A tech CEO with an agenda cannot be allowed to decide what the duly elected President of the United States may or may not say. The great achievement of social media has been the expansion of free expression and the breadth of our public square. When they selectively suppress political speech, they undermine the argument for extending to them the special legal protections they need to survive.

Twitter and Google would be wise to follow Facebook’s lead while they still can.

NASA, SpaceX Set To Retry Launch Of Manned Space Mission at 3:22 P.M. EDT

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 16:15

NASA astronauts are scheduled to blast into space on Saturday at 3:22 p.m. aboard a rocket from Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which would mark the first space launch of American astronauts from U.S. soil in nearly a decade.

The first attempted launch on Wednesday was scrubbed with less than than 17 minutes left in the the countdown clock because of stormy weather around the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The forecast for Saturday doesn’t look much better. Weather.com says at 3 p.m., there will be scattered thunderstorms in the area, with a 55% chance of rain.

“Mission managers plan to make an earlier decision on weather hazards in a bid to avoid unnecessarily wearing out the crew with another suit-up and full day of launch preparations,” Fox News reported. “Back-to-back wet dress rehearsals” disrupt the astronauts’ sleep cycles, NASA chief Jim Bridenstine told a Friday news conference.

If successful, American astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will fly from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Crew Dragon capsule. The last such launch came in July 2011 and became the final mission of NASA’s space shuttle program.

Crew Dragon Demo-2 will also be the first two-person orbital spaceflight launched from the U.S. since STS-4 in 1982.

“It’s just been an incredible journey to get us this far, and in some ways it’s really hard to believe we’re gonna launch next week, but it’s incredibly exciting,” Hurley said  last week during a meeting of the National Space Council, a policy-steering body led by Vice President Mike Pence.

“It’s a real honor to just be a part of this program and to launch American rockets from Florida one more time,” said Hurley, 53, who was on board that last space shuttle flight in 2011.

Hurley, the mission commander, and Behnken will conduct experiments on board the ISS, where they are scheduled to stay for one to four months, until the next Crew Dragon launch. They will then return to Earth for a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Canaveral.

“Our country has been through a lot,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said last week in a news briefing. “But this is a unique moment when all of America can take a moment and look at our country do something stunning again, and that is to launch American astronauts on an American rocket from American soil to the space station.”

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence visited the Kennedy Space Center three days ago for the first launch attempt, and Trump is scheduled to fly down again on Saturday.

If the mission is scrubbed again, the next launch window will be Sunday afternoon. Weather reports look better for that day.

WATCH: Rioters In D.C. Harass, Chase Fox News Crew Reporting On George Floyd Demonstrations

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 15:46

A Fox News crew including reporter Leland Vittert was harassed and chased while reporting on the riots in Washington, D.C. that began in protest of the police-involved death of George Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis.

The Daily Caller News Foundation was also following the protests and caught the incident on film as demonstrators shout “F*** Fox News! F*** Fox News!” and “F*** that fake-a** news!”

One protester ran up to Vittert and grabbed his microphone before throwing it at the reporter. Water was also thrown on Vittert as he and his crew left the area. The DCNF said Vittert was reporting live when the protesters started to attack.

Fox News reported that Vittert and his crew were “pushed and hit with water bottles, and a Fox News camera was broken when a member of the mob tried to grab it.”

“Imagine what it’s like to be a black man, feeling like this every f***ing day,” a woman shouted at the news crew.

Fox reported that the crew reported the incident to a nearby policeman and that those involved were not seriously injured.

Vittert was reporting live during “Fox News At Night” with Shannon Bream. In footage posted by Newsbusters Editor Curtis Houck, Bream attempts to turn the broadcast over to Vittert for his take, but he is surrounded by screaming protesters and shakes his head to tell her not to switch to him. After Fox cuts away, Bream passes the segment to reporter Jonathan Serrie, who was reporting live from Atlanta, Georgia and had no issues with the crowd.

More from Fox News:

Hours earlier, the White House had been on lockdown as protests and riots escalated around the country. Fox News journalists and other members of the press were moved inside for a brief period with approximately a dozen reporters sheltered inside the West Wing.

The ongoing protests are in reaction to the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis May 25 after a white officer pinned him down by pressing his knee into the back of Floyd’s neck while Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was fired and on Friday was charged with murder. Three other police officers were also fired but have not been charged.

Large-scale rioting broke out  Friday night across the U.S., from New York City and Washington, D.C., to Chicago; Columbus, Ohio, Louisville, Ky., and Dallas, to San Jose, Calif.; Los Angeles and Portland, Ore.

CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta was also attacked, with multiple windows broken. The logo out front was also spray-painted as protesters waved a Black Lives Matter flag. A CNN crew was also arrested in Minneapolis but was quickly released. Fox News expressed support for what happened to the CNN reporters, but CNN has yet to issue any support for what happened to Vittert and the Fox News crew.

GRAHAM: Showboating With 100,000 Dead

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 15:30

On May 27, the American coronavirus death toll rose to six figures: 100,000 lives lost. That’s a very sad number, made sadder when we ponder that the virus prevents loved ones from saying goodbye in person and makes any funeral an extremely small event.

America’s largest national newspapers have all made dramatic front pages out of the number. The New York Times came first on Sunday, filling its entire front page and three more pages with names of the victims. USA Today followed on Wednesday with an entire front page in black and white and photos of the dead. The Washington Post waited until we reached the horrible number but still printed some stories on the front page.

In The Post, Marc Fisher brought the usual emotional language to the milestone. It “slipped by like so many other days in this dark spring, one more spin of the Earth, one more headline in a numbing cascade of grim news.” It’s hardly slipping by. They’ve made sure of that.

CNN promoted each and every one of these performative pages, which strongly enhanced the notion that this isn’t just a number. It is a political strategy. Each of these newspapers and CNN haven’t just reported on President Donald Trump; they’ve cast him as a dangerous man who should have been removed from office long before he had a chance to campaign for reelection.

It’s the same strategy callously projected by Politico writer (and CNN analyst) Ryan Lizza, who asked White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany: “We’re about to cross the 100,000 dead American milestone. … on Election Day, what does the White House view as the number of dead Americans where you can say that you successfully defeated this pandemic? Is there a number?”

He didn’t ask just once. He kept repeating it. The implied message: The White House should be too embarrassed to ever claim victory, to ever claim that it did something right; that the situation could have been worse; and that it listened to the experts and took action.

You can’t merely grieve for the 100,000 in a vague way. This has to be trotted out as talking points, as Public Rationale No. 1 for removing Trump from office in November.

Lizza’s reporter girlfriend, New York Magazine Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi, tried this tactic first, in a more baldly political way. A month ago, she asked Trump, “If an American president loses more Americans over the course of six weeks than died in the entirety of the Vietnam War, does he deserve to be reelected?”

CNN loves this line of attack questioning from this Sonny and Cher of smears. In April, Brian Stelter interviewed Nuzzi and Lizza as they sat in front of their fireplace. Stelter, referring to Nuzzi’s question to Trump, merely asked her, “Why did you think it was important to ask?” Apparently, it’s important to always imply to the public that Trump’s incompetence killed tens of thousands of people. (Rep. Adam Schiff was even more blunt, suggesting a successful impeachment effort would have saved many lives.)

Lizza’s response to Stelter looks even phonier now than it did then. He complained that right-wingers think these questions are “all somehow showboating, or not real journalism” and added with a straight face, “that’s just wrong and has never been the case since I’ve been covering the White House.” That’s a lie. He then added to that lie with further showboating.

We can all lament this death toll, but some are clearly beating their breasts in the most opportunistic way imaginable. Doing so doesn’t honor the victims. It merely exploits them.

Minneapolis Mayor Asks Rioters To Wear Face Masks And Practice Social Distancing As City BURNS

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 15:05

Minneapolis, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey and other city officials released a statement on Thursday condemning the violence in the city but urging rioters to wear masks and practice social distancing.

“While acknowledging the tremendous pain and trauma in Minneapolis, City leaders condemned the violence and widespread damage that has occurred in the city following the protests sparked by the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis Police in south Minneapolis on May 25,” the statement said.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) called in the Minnesota National Guard to help maintain peace, while Frey issued a declaration of local emergency.

“We need to offer radical love and compassion that we all have in us,” Frey at a press conference on Thursday. “I believe in this city and I know that you do to.”

City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins called for the riots to calm down.

“As we stand here grieving, yet another loss of black life, I am asking my colleagues, the mayor, and anyone else who is concerned about the state of affairs in our community, to declare a state of emergency declaring racism as a public health issue,” Jenkins said.

The press release ends by asking the people who are currently burning down the city and destroying and looting local businesses to wear face masks.

“The City encourages everyone to exercise caution to stay safe while participating in demonstrations, including wearing masks and physical distancing as much as possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The City has made hundreds of masks available to protesters this week,” the statement said.

During the press conference, Frey told rioters their anger was justified and “right.”

“What we’ve seen over the last two days, and the emotion-ridden conflict over last night, is the result of so much built-up anger and sadness, anger and sadness that has been ingrained in our black community not just because of five minutes of horror but 400 years,” Frey said, according to The Washington Examiner (my former employer). “If you’re feeling that sadness and that anger, it’s not only understandable. It’s right.”

Frey appeared to change his tune on Saturday, speaking more harshly about the rioters.

“This is no longer about protesting,” he said. “This is about violence, and we need to make sure that it stops.”

As CBS News reported, protesters in Minneapolis “defied curfew orders as firefighters worked to put out fires across the city in the fourth night of unrest over George Floyd’s death.”

More from CBS:

CBS Minnesota reports they were battling fires at businesses. Demonstrators also set fires to dumpsters, trash bins, furniture and other items on residential blocks near the police department’s 5th Precinct building.

The Pentagon has put military police on alert to go to Minneapolis. The units are on notice to return to their bases within 30 minutes, which is the last alert stage before actually receiving an order, CBS News’ David Martin reports.

Bill De Blasio Fine With George Floyd Protests Even As Businesses, Other Gatherings Must Adhere To Coronavirus Rules Or Face Fines

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 14:26

Even though New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has threatened to fine religious gatherings and businesses who re-open before he says so, he is now okay with the often-violent demonstrations over the death of George Floyd, who died in a police-involved incident.

“I want to just say anyone who wants to protest, we’re going to protect your right to protest, but please also respect [that] the cop in front of you did not create the problem,” de Blasio told listeners to “The Brian Lehrer Show” on WNYC radio.

The New York Post reported that de Blasio “was referring to the hundreds of activists who gathered in Lower Manhattan Thursday — in violation of the city’s pandemic lockdown rules — in the latest national demonstration sparked in the days since a handcuffed Floyd, who was black, died after a white police officer held him to the ground with a knee to his neck in Minneapolis.”

“While many protesters in the city wore protective face masks, they largely flouted social-distancing rules,” the Post continued. “Over 70 demonstrators were arrested including for criminal possession of a weapon and assaulting officers.”

De Blasio then urged police to respond to rioters with “a light touch.”

“I want to see a light touch because people are undeniably angry for a reason,” he said, according to the Post.

More from the Post:

De Blasio said nothing about the demonstrators violating city and state rules against large gatherings, even though he insisted earlier this month that rallies “spread the disease and help kill people.”

In early May, nine protesters pushing for the Empire State to reopen from its coronavirus lockdown were busted outside City Hall for not obeying social distancing guidelines.

At the time, Blasio said gatherings, including the small reopen protest, are prohibited.

“We’re not allowing any kind of gathering, period,” the mayor said at a press briefing.

“I don’t care if it’s 20 people or a hundred people or a thousand people, it’s not going to be allowed. So the point is, if you gather, NYPD is coming there to give you a summons and if you resist, to arrest you, period, across all communities.”

“So no, of course this organization is not allowed to hold a rally that goes against every rule we’ve got. They can express themselves online. There’s all sorts of other ways, but if they attempt to hold a rally, they will be summonsed immediately, and that’s true for people of any viewpoint. We’re not doing rallies at this point. They spread the disease and help to kill people. It’s unacceptable,” he said.

As is typical with the media and Democrat politicians, riots that lead to burning vehicles and buildings, as well as looting and violence, are allowed and even praised, while actual peaceful protests are condemned.

KLAVAN: Of Course Trump Is Right About Twitter

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 14:00

Of course Trump is right about Twitter. What are we even talking about? Of course he is.

The Wall Street Journal, and other conservative venues, have the shivers over the president’s recent executive order concerning social media. The EO takes aim at section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which allows social media platforms some leeway to moderate content without being held legally responsible for that content.

Twitter is misusing that protection in order to censor conservative speech. There is no question about this. There is no gray area. They put a warning on a Trump tweet expressing concern about the possibility of fraud in mass mail-in votes. The warning referred readers to leftwing sites like CNN and The Washington Post whose views on this matter differ from the president’s. Do they fact check tweets from CNN to tell readers that the president disagrees? Of course not.

The other day, Trump tweeted some thunder at the thugs looting and burning Minneapolis. Twitter put a warning on the tweet, saying it “glorified violence” because it contained the phrase “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Left wing tweets — like one from leftist filmmaker Michael Moore encouraging rioters to “demolish” a local police station — which the rioters did — carried no warning.

The Twitter Head of Site Integrity is Yoel Roth, a man who has called the Trump administration Nazis and suggested that the “flyover” states that voted for him support fascism. When this was pointed out, Twitter head Jack Dorsey said, “Please leave our employees out of this,” because he was “ultimately responsible.” What the hell does that even mean? A Stalinist lowlife is undermining the president’s right to communicate with the people. Hit the road, Jack.

The Wall Street Journal frets: “Facebook, YouTube and Twitter aren’t utilities or soapboxes in the park. They’re businesses that earn piles of money by selling ads against your missives. They’re within their rights to set community standards and spike posts they deem a violation.”

Nonsense. Nonsense too are legalistic arguments that Twitter is not the federal government and therefore not subject to the First Amendment.

This is a classic case of conservatives vanishing up their own fundament on the issue of speech. Conservative media outlets tremble now if a social conservative expresses the opinion that homosexuality is a sin. They cancel conservatives who fear demographic change through unchecked immigration, accepting the leftist charge that this is bigotry per se. They avoid those — like myself — who feel that feminism is destructive to the lives of women.

This policy in conservative media outlets comes down to this: “We are yellow-bellied cowards afraid to fight the war of ideas lest it cost us money and reputation but, boy oh boy, are we going to sound angry about stuff so you’ll pay us gobs of money to scream and yell uselessly while the left takes over the country.”

Social media is the new way we talk to one another. If our free speech is being hampered on social media — and it is being hampered by leftists who want to silence conservatives — that has to be fixed. That there may be problems and obstacles to fixing that is part of the process. Solve the problems. Overcome the obstacles. However it’s done, do it. It’s not allowed. It’s not American. And if somehow we’ve mistakenly made it legal, change the bloody law.

The Left used to understand that corporations can become dangerous power centers that threaten freedom. But now, since corporations are largely in line with leftist ideas, they’ve abandoned that truth. It remains a truth nonetheless. If teams of conservative lawyers working round the clock can’t figure out that giant communications corporations censoring conservative speech spells the practical end of the First Amendment and therefore can’t be protected by the First Amendment, then my prescription is that we get some different lawyers.

A visceral hatred of Donald Trump in some quarters of conservativism has blinded conservatives to the fact that he is the one and only major conservative figure who understands the battle we’re in. It’s not against Democrats. It’s not against socialists. It’s against a communications industry — news, entertainment, and now social media — in which censoring the Right has become the norm.

Trump is absolutely right. Twitter is censoring conservatives. By any means necessary, it has to be stopped.

College Football Hall Of Fame In Atlanta Vandalized, Looted. Organization Responds.

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 13:34

The College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta was vandalized and looted on Friday evening amidst a wave of demonstrations and rioting that have taken hold across the United States following the death of George Floyd earlier this week.

The situation devolved over the course of the evening, with NBC News correspondent Blayne Alexander reporting multiple car fires and Fox News Atlanta reporting that people were breaking into the hall of fame downtown and taking off with “various items.”

Later in the evening, Alexander posted a video of the hall of fame, where broken glass and empty coat hangers line the sidewalk. The building appears to have been vandalized from the inside, and an alarm can be heard in the background.

A very tough night for downtown Atlanta. This is the College Football Hall of Fame. #AtlantaProtest pic.twitter.com/K7vt95n8lV

— Blayne Alexander (@ReporterBlayne) May 30, 2020

Atlanta police confirmed to Fox News that protesters had started looting and damaging local businesses, and at one point, someone fired unspecified shots toward an officer in a patrol vehicle. The news agency did not report any injuries from that specific incident.

The College Football Hall of Fame released a statement after the building was looted and expressed support for the family of George Floyd and condemned the “chaos and disorder” that had erupted, reported 11Alive

“We support the peaceful protests that honor his memory but unfortunately, they deteriorated into chaos and disorder. We are heartbroken to see the damage to our city and the Hall of Fame,” said the College Football Hall of Fame in a statement.

“As our Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said… We are better than this, better than this as a city, and better than this as a country. In the coming days and weeks, we’ll work to pick up the pieces, to build back the sacred walls that housed memories and honored those who played the game many of whom fought these same injustices throughout their storied careers,” said the statement.

The College Football Hall of Fame’s invocation toward the end of the statement was a reference to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ press conference on Friday evening condemning the destruction in the city.

“When I saw the murder of George Floyd, I hurt like a mother would hurt. And yesterday, when I heard there were rumors about violent protests in Atlanta, I did what a mother would do, I called my son and I said ‘Where are you?’ I said, ‘I cannot protect you and black boys shouldn’t be out today’,” said Bottoms, as The Daily Wire previously reported. “So you not going to out concern me and out care about where we are in America.”

“So what I see happening in the streets of Atlanta is not Atlanta. This is not a protest. This is not in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. This is chaos. A protest has purpose,” said Bottoms.

“If you want change America, go and register to vote. Show up at the polls on June 9. Do it in November. That is the change we need in this country. You are disgracing our city. You are disgracing the life of George Floyd and every other person who has been killed in this country,” Bottoms concluded. “We are better than this. We are better than this as a city. We are better than this as a country. Go home.”

LIMBAUGH: Kayleigh McEnany Shines On The Job

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 12:30

Don’t listen to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany’s predictable critics. The level of vitriol the leftist media hurls at her daily — during and apart from the press briefings — conclusively proves she is doing a superb job.

Liberal journalists whip their long knives in her direction and seem shocked she doesn’t grovel. They’ve been savaging her since her first press conference on May 1. No one with the audacity to work for President Donald Trump deserves a second’s worth of honeymoon.

On McEnany’s first day, New York Times White House correspondent Annie Karni quoted her as saying she would never lie to the press and then cited numerous examples of her supposedly violating the oath right off the bat. They were lying in wait for her.

They still are. On May 26, Tom Jones from Poynter called McEnany “arrogant, inexperienced and ineffective.” “(S)he just looks overmatched,” he wrote. “(I)n barely more than a month, McEnany has already had several high-profile controversies.”

I wonder why she’s had “controversies.” Could it be that the White House media cabal enters those briefings with war paint — ready to smear President Trump and discredit McEnany if she interferes with their plan?

It would be different if the media were to use the briefings to help inform the viewing public. But few of them ever ask questions that could better inform the citizenry. Instead, they serve up accusations not even thinly disguised as genuine questions.

Let me give you a sadly typical example. Politico’s Ryan Lizza asked McEnany: “What does the White House view as having — by Election Day, what does the White House view as the number of dead Americans where you can say that you successfully defeated this pandemic? Is there a number?”

As I watched this, I was stunned at the brazen inappropriateness of the question — and few things from this bunch surprise me. When McEnany refused the bait and said that every single life matters, Lizza persisted, asking, “When voters go to the polls in November and they want to judge the president on his response to this pandemic, what is the number of dead Americans that they should tolerate …?”

The question was so out of line I admire McEnany for retaining her composure. But she crossed the media’s inviolable line in telling Lizza he was asking the wrong question and suggesting that he could have asked a more pertinent one. How dare she position herself as his equal?

Fair observers know that Lizza’s question was crass, outrageous and an egregious example of the left politicizing everything about the coronavirus.

The media’s attitude is purely adversarial, yet they act appalled that McEnany returns fire, albeit calmly, respectfully and eloquently. They uniformly dismiss this Harvard Law graduate as green and over her head, but she is remarkably polished, and it is driving them mad.

You see, you are not allowed to talk back to the sacrosanct Washington press corps, especially if you work for that unrefined, interloping president who stole the election and is still trespassing on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. As Trump’s press secretary, McEnany is an accessory to his adverse possession of the White House who forfeited any expectation of civil treatment when she accepted the job.

Some television anchors and commentators are particularly offended by McEnany’s aforementioned practice of parrying the hostile questions they volley at her with suggestions of other questions. This just cannot happen because the press is holy and McEnany is their inferior who must curtsy while they abuse her and slander her boss.

It is odd enough these self-important journos believe they are above challenge, but it is even more so considering they draw first blood. Do they actually believe McEnany is supposed to stand there passively in the face of their mistreatment, and not fire back and reasonably defend herself and President Trump?

I can guarantee you one thing: The tens of millions of Trump supporters don’t agree, and they have her back. We don’t share the media’s warped belief that they can behave rudely and then whine like innocent victims when they get a small dose of their own medicine.

The media can continue this sick charade that they are objective journalists, but half the nation knows better, and the other half probably does, too. But many approve of the media’s odious behavior because they applaud a media at war with a president they loathe. Anyone familiar with media “fact-checkers” knows that today’s left describes contrary opinions as lies.

Even if McEnany were completely deferential, the Trump-hunting media would never accept her unless she betrayed Trump. They would accuse her of lying anytime she presented a position that differs from theirs.

The liberal media will continue to posture and complain about McEnany, and the rest of us can rest assured that in so doing, they further validate her in our eyes.

TOTO: Fake News Takes A Personal Toll On Us

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 11:00

Getting hung up on is never fun, but this time it felt even worse.

This wasn’t an old squeeze or potential employer abruptly ending a call. It was one of my closest friends, someone I’ve known for north of 20 years.

And, of course, it was about politics.

It didn’t start that way. My conversation with “Steve” eventually steered toward COVID-19, the Dumbo in any room at this point. We both agreed it’s not a great idea to finger point at the moment. It’s still too new, too raw, and that would be counter productive.

Later? Of course.

Still, I was curious what he thought about the media’s coverage of the pandemic. Specifically, how journalists predicted the Republican Governors of Georgia and Florida would have “blood on their hands” for cautiously reopening their states while ignoring the significant miscues made by Team New York – specifically Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Steve had previously set his anti-Trump rage aside to say the media had been behaving badly in the Age of Trump. I suspected we had more common ground to tread.

Not even close.

Steve extolled Cuomo’s leadership, comparing the governor’s press conferences to what he called President Donald Trump’s meandering, counter-productive pressers.

Yeah, I saw several shades of red. I actually appreciated Cuomo’s tone and tenor at first. And, as an ex-New Yorker, his accent and moxie struck something tribal within me.

Then I learned from untraditional media outlets how he allowed infected patients into New York nursing homes, dooming hundreds, if not thousands, of elderly Americans. Later, he began sanitizing subway cars many weeks after the virus hit the Big Apple hard.

I wasn’t ready, or eager, to defend some of the president’s clumsier comments. Still, it’s clear the media framed reality in such a monstrously one-sided fashion it was worth noting. Surely Steve knew about the nursing homes scandal surrounding Cuomo’s leadership, the one reporters have dragged their feet on for weeks, but that found legs on social media?

A corrupt press helps no one, even if it temporarily boosts “your side” for a spell. When half the country doesn’t trust the media, that’s a big, dangerous deal.

Instead, Steve stood by Cuomo like Tammy Wynette clinging to her beau. This wasn’t some clueless bumpkin. I’d guess Steve is smarter than I am, with plenty of real-world experience at his back.

What other false narratives did he believe?

I pushed further, bringing up the Russian collusion hoax, another example of extreme press malfeasance.

“Oh, I believe Trump colluded with Russia,” Steve said.

Whaaat?

At this point the conversation got more heated, but we weren’t shouting or hurling epithets at each other. We were having a debate, even though I’d rather be quizzing him about TV shows he’s been watching or memories of our favorite pizza joints.

Then he hung up on me.

Was that the end of our friendship? It’s doubtful, but why would he treat a longtime friend this way? Our bond deserved better than a move reserved for pesky telemarketers.

He could have just said, “Let’s change the subject.” I’m OK with that. I’ve done it before when a conversation turned up the heat. Looking back, I should have done so myself.

Then I gave it some thought.

Pre-Trump, Steve would probably fit as a center-right voter with some socially liberal views. Trump changed much of that. I’m guessing he began feasting on the media’s insane anti-Trump narratives from Inauguration day onward.

Day after day, pseudo scandal after pseudo scandal, the media messages likely took hold.

Remember, “The walls are closing in…?”

It didn’t help that Bad Trump often appeared on the scene, sharing toxic Tweets or getting in the gutter when attacked.

I certainly share some of the blame for our dustup. I’ve gotten better about bailing on heated political debates before they go too far.

Not this time. That’s on me.

I’m not really angry with Steve. Most people assume the media is mostly fair and balanced well enough. They don’t have time to seek out smart alternate news sites. They have jobs to do, meals to make, and wee ones to tuck in for a safe goodnight.

Extreme media bias is getting worse as we speak. Think the Covington Kids, the Jussie Smollett case or, more recently, the ballad of Tara Reade.

CNN anchors might literally wave pom poms to promote Joe Biden’s White House bid come October, assuming the media’s attempt to hide his sad decline holds fast. Other reporters may act in lock step, with or without the theatrics.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson recently blasted the media’s distortions regarding the pandemic.

“So, no, CNN and MSNBC aren’t bringing you science. They’re peddling panic and reckless moral judgement. It’s hurting the country,” he said.

President Trump famously said “Fake News” is the enemy of the people, then expanded the phrase to include the press in toto.

Sadly, the latter is increasingly right. It’s also partially to blame for pushing old friendships to the breaking point.

[Update] Trump Did NOT Order Army To Ready Military Police To Deploy To Minneapolis After Democrats Fail To Secure City

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 06:12

Update: Alyssa Farah, White House director of communications, said reports about the deployment were “false.”

“False: off the record – title 10 not under discussion,” said Farah in an email response to the AP, which ignored her request that the statement be “off the record.”

The Department of Defense instructed the Army late on Friday to ready its Military Police Corps to respond to the continued rioting in Minneapolis after Democrat officials at the state and local levels repeatedly failed to secure the city.

“Trump made the request on a phone call from the Oval Office on Thursday night that included [Defense Secretary Mark] Esper, National Security Advisor Robert O’ Brien and several others. The president asked Esper for rapid deployment options if the Minneapolis protests continued to spiral out of control,” The Associated Press reported, citing senior administration sources. “The person said the military units would be deployed under the Insurrection Act of 1807, which was last used in 1992 during the riots in Los Angeles that followed the Rodney King trial.”

The move by the president comes after Minnesota Democrat Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey failed to take the actions needed to quell the violent riots which have endangered countless lives and already caused well into the tens of millions of dollars worth of property damage.

Soldiers at two bases — Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York — have been told to be ready to be deployed with the next few hours and soldiers at two other bases — Fort Carson in Colorado and Fort Riley in Kansas— have been told to be ready to deploy within the next 24 hours.

In Minneapolis, residents pleaded for help as the city continued to descend into chaos, with one resident, Ryan Griffin, writing on Twitter, “My neighborhood, burning. Median income $33k. Many have no transit. Our pharmacies, banks, gas stations, restaurants are destroyed. The six closest grocery stores are looted. Our post office is on fire. The nearest gas station is on fire. No response from our city or state.”

ProPublica reporter Alec MacGillis noted that a staffer for Minnesota Democrat Attorney General Keith Ellison was apparently “pleading for help in Minneapolis” as the city was overrun by violent rioters.

‘KARMA’S A MOTHER’: Rapper Killer Mike Unloads On CNN For ‘Feeding Fear And Anger Every Day’

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 03:21

Rapper Killer Mike unloaded on CNN during a press conference on Friday night where he was speaking to the community in Atlanta in an attempt to calm riots that were going on, saying that CNN needs to “stop feeding fear and anger every day.”

Killer Mike’s comments come as a fourth night of riots hits some of the larger cities in the U.S., which started earlier this week in response to the death of George Floyd.

“I love CNN, I love Cartoon Network,” Killer Mike said. “But, I’d like to say to CNN right now, karma’s a mother, stop feeding fear and anger every day. Stop making people feel so fearful. Give them hope.”

“I’m glad they only took down a sign and defaced a building, and they’re not killing human beings like that policeman did,” Killer Mike continued. “I’m glad they only destroyed some brick and mortar and they didn’t rip a father from a son. They didn’t rip a son from a mother, like the policeman did.”

“After it burns, will we be left with char or will we rise like the phoenix out of the ashes like Atlanta has always done?” Killer Mike continued. “Will we use this as a moment to say that we will not do what other cities have done and, in fact, we will get better than we’ve been?”

Killer Mike’s comments come after rioters attacked CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta late on Friday which caused a significant amount of damage to the building.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms slammed the rioters during a press conference on Friday night, saying that they were disgracing the city.

When I saw the murder of George Floyd, I hurt like a mother would hurt. And yesterday, when I heard there were rumors about violent protests in Atlanta, I did what a mother would do, I called my son and I said ‘Where are you?’ I said, ‘I cannot protect you and black boys shouldn’t be out today’,” Bottoms said. “So you not going to out concern me and out care about where we are in America.”

“So what I see happening in the streets of Atlanta is not Atlanta. This is not a protest. This is not in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. This is chaos. A protest has purpose,” Bottoms continued.

Go home.”

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 03:00

Violent rioters reportedly stormed a police precinct in New York City on Friday and lit law enforcement vehicles on fire.

CNN senior law enforcement analyst James Gagliano tweeted: “NYPD source informs me 88 Pct in Brooklyn just been overrun. Police Commissioner Shea has called a Level 3 mobilization. Requires all special units respond and four cars from every command in the city to location. 84 Pct under siege, as well. Also, Brooklyn North.”

Gagliano also shared a photograph of a police van that was lit on fire.

The news comes as riots also broke out in Atlanta at CNN’s headquarters and in Washington, D.C., at the White House and the Treasury Department.

The Washington Post highlighted major developments from today in the George Floyd case:

  • Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday afternoon.
  • The Hennepin County Medical Examiner announced it has “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation” in the preliminary results of Floyd’s autopsy.
  • Minneapolis and St. Paul are under an overnight curfew this weekend, according to an order issued by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The curfew is in effect Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Roseville, Minn., which neighbors the Twin Cities, is also under a weekend overnight curfew.
  • Chauvin had previously shot one suspect, was involved in the fatal shooting of another, and received at least 17 complaints during his nearly two decades with the Minneapolis Police Department, according to police records and archived news reports. He also previously served in the military.

Violent Rioters Bust Into CNN Headquarters, Throw Explosive Inside

Sat, 05/30/2020 - 01:58

Rioters broke into CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday night, shattering windows, throwing objects at law enforcement officials, and lighting police cars on fire.

After riots escalated over the course of a few hours, rioters appeared to begin pushing police into the building, and threw at least one large firework artillery shell inside the building, which exploded near law enforcement officers.

“SKYFOX5 flew over the CNN Center, located at 190 Marietta Street NW, where protesters could be seen climbing on top of the giant CNN letters outside the building,” Fox 5 Atlanta reported. “Graffiti littered the sides of the building. At one point one of glass doors to the front of the building was shattered by a demonstrator. Bottles were being thrown at police working to maintain order and prevent further damage.”

Floyd’s Family To Hire High-Profile Medical Examiner, Says Attorney: ‘We Already Saw The Truth’

Fri, 05/29/2020 - 23:49

The family of George Floyd, the 46-year-old Minneapolis man who died after he was arrested by police, reportedly plans to hire high-profile medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden, the former New York City medical examiner who performed the independent autopsy on Jeffrey Epstein and testified in the trial of O.J. Simpson.

According to the New York Daily News, Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Floyd’s family, suggested that the family’s decision to hire an independent medical examiner was influenced by distrust from “so many other cases where they have these people who work with the city come up with things that are such an illusion.”

“We’re not going to rely on this DA or this city to tell us the truth. We already saw the truth,” said Crump, presumably in reference to the graphic video taken of Floyd’s arrest.

Crump declined to speculate on the future contents of the medical examiner’s official findings, reports the news agency.

“They were living, breathing, walking just fine until the police accosted them and assaulted and battered them,” said Crump.

According to a criminal complaint filed against Derek Chauvin, the former officer who was charged Friday with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, the official medical examiner has preliminarily determined that Floyd likely died from a combination of three factors, as The Daily Wire previously reported.

“The autopsy revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation. Mr Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death,” said the complaint, originally obtained by CNN.

On the evening of his death, Floyd was arrested for allegedly spending counterfeit money, and “stiffened up, fell to the ground, and told officers he was claustrophobic” when they tried to lead him to the squad car, according to the criminal complaint.

Chauvin, the officer who has been charged in his death, arrived soon after, and tried to help the others get Floyd into the car.

The criminal complaint against Chauvin continues as follows:

While standing outside the car, Mr. Floyd began saying and repeating that he could not breathe. The defendant went to the passenger side and tried to get Mr. Floyd into the car from that side and [officers] Lane and Kueng assisted.

The defendant pulled Mr. Floyd out of the passenger side of the squad car at 8:19:38 p.m. and Mr. Floyd went to the ground face down and still handcuffed. Kueng held Mr. Floyd’s back and Lane held his legs. The defendant placed his left knee in the area of Mr. Floyd’s head and neck. Mr. Floyd said, “I can’t breathe” multiple times and repeatedly said, “Mama” and “please,” as well. The defendant and the other two officers stayed in their positions.

The officers said, “You are talking fine” to Mr. Floyd as he continued to move back and forth. Lane asked, “should we roll him on his side?” and the defendant said, “No, staying put where we got him.” Officer Lane said, “I am worried about excited delirium or whatever.” The defendant said, “That’s why we have him on his stomach.” None of the three officers moved from their positions.

BWC video shows Mr. Floyd continue to move and breathe. At 8:24:24, Mr. Floyd stopped moving. At 8:25:31 the video appears to show Mr. Floyd ceasing to breathe or speak. Lane said, “want to roll him on his side.” Kueng checked Mr. Floyd’s right wrist for a pulse and said, “I couldn’t find one.” None of the officers moved from their positions.

At 8:27:24, the defendant removed his knee from Mr. Floyd’s neck. An ambulance and emergency medical personnel arrived, the officers placed Mr. Floyd on a gurney, and the ambulance left the scene. Mr. Floyd was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Following the description of the encounter, the criminal complaint emphasizes that Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, including 2 minutes and 53 seconds of time during which Floyd was “non-responsive.”

New York Daily News reports that Floyd’s family “simply ‘does not trust anything coming from the Minneapolis police department’ after the first official description of his death on Monday night was that he resisted arrest and died from an apparent medical condition.”
