Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) has introduced two bills to defund the Manhattan District Attorney’s (DA) Office following the indictment of President Donald Trump.

Trump was indicted in early April on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. But critics have called the case “weak,” suggesting political motives behind the move.

In a comment emailed to the Epoch Times about the bills, Biggs wrote:

“As the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, I will not allow District Attorney Alvin Bragg to misuse federal resources sent by Congress to fund the weaponized prosecution of a former U.S. president, while blatantly ignoring soaring crime in New York City.

The first bill, the Accountability for Lawless Violence In Our Neighborhoods Act, or the ALVIN Act, would prohibit federal funds from being awarded to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and requires the Office to repay federal funds granted after Jan. 1, 2022.

The second bill, the No Federal Funds for Political Prosecutions Act, would prohibit state or local law enforcement agencies from using funds or property seized through asset forfeiture to investigate or prosecute the president, vice president, or a candidate for the office of president in a criminal case.

Biggs added that it was concerning to see the Manhattan DA’s office wasting federal resources for political purposes instead of addressing serious crimes in the city.

“[W]ith an almost insurmountable national debt that exceeds $31 trillion, the nation simply cannot afford to support Mr. Bragg’s politicization of the criminal justice system,” Biggs said.

New York City, like most other metropolitan areas across the United States, has seen a major spike in violent crimes over the past two years.

Following the death of George Floyd, fringe positions like defunding the police and minimizing penalties for violent crime became more mainstream among many left-wing prosecutors and DAs.

As DA, Bragg has reduced more than half of the felony charges that came through his office to misdemeanors. Republicans say this approach to law enforcement is in part responsible for the massive increase in violent crime.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has indicated his own opposition to the prosecution of Trump. Thus, the bill could stand for a vote in the lower chamber.

Prospects for the bills are less sanguine in the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority. Democrats are likely to oppose the legislation, as they have accused Republicans of attempting to meddle in a legal matter.

The US city of Minneapolis has passed a resolution allowing for the adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, to be broadcast year-round over loudspeakers.  In 2004, Hamtramck, Michigan, became the first city to legalise the public call to prayer, followed by Dearborn, where Muslims are a majority. MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Minneapolis became the first major city in America to allow the Islamic call to prayer to be broadcast from mosques publicly for each of the five daily prayers after a unanimous vote by the City Council Thursday.

The resolution, authored by Council member Aisha Chughtai, one of three Muslim representatives of the 13-member council, amended the noise violation exemption related to sounds associated with religious worship.

“It is really important for us at the city to approach all issues from a lens of ensuring equal access for all people. And that’s what we’ve really done here. This is an item that benefits people of all faith,” she said just before the vote.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations had helped push for the change, which allowed some morning and evening calls that had previously been prohibited.

“This is a historic victory for religious freedom and pluralism for our entire nation. We thank the members of the Minneapolis City Council for setting this great example, and we urge other cities to follow it,” CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said in a press release.

Trump, 76, was “not only willing but also eager to testify” during the meeting with James’ lawyers who questioned him about his company’s businesses practices, his attorney Alina Habba said as the Republican headed into the attorney general’s Manhattan office.

“He remains resolute in his stance that he has nothing to conceal, and he looks forward to educating the Attorney General about the immense success of his multi-billion dollar company,” Habba said.

The openness to talk is a staunch reversal from Trump’s previous deposition in the civil case last year when he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights hundreds of times in order to remain silent and avoid self-incrimination.

James claimed Trump and three of his children lied to banks about his net worth and overvalued his assets including his hotels and golf courses by billions.

This was despite the fact that federal tax revenues in the first six months of this fiscal year were $2,048,196,000,000, which was the second-highest in the nation’s history (when compared to the inflation-adjusted numbers for the tax revenues collected in the first six months of previous fiscal years).

From February to March, according to the Monthly Treasury Statement, the fiscal 2023 federal deficit increased by $378,077,000,000, climbing from $722,627,000,000 to $1,100,704,000,000.

So far, in fiscal 2023, while the federal government collected $2,048,196,000,000 in taxes, it spent $3,148,900,000,000—resulting in the deficit of $1,100,704,000,000.

When the historical budget numbers are adjusted for inflation into March 2023 dollars, it turns out that this year’s October-through-March federal deficit is the fourth largest in the nation’s history. In fiscal 2021, during the COVID pandemic, the October-through-March deficit was $1,944,334,490,000 in constant March 2023 dollars. That was the largest deficit the federal government has ever run in the first six months of a fiscal year.

The second-largest was in October-through-March of fiscal 2009, when the federal government ran a deficit that was $1,357,706,460,000 in constant March 2023 dollars. The third-largest was in October-through-March of fiscal 2011, when the federal government ran a deficit of $1,120,280,830,000 in constant March 2023 dollars.

In October-through-March of fiscal 2012, the federal government also ran a deficit that exceeded $1 trillion in constant March 2023 dollars. But that fiscal year’s first-six-month deficit of $1,024,999,220,000 in constant March 2023 dollars was less than this year’s six-month deficit of $1,100,704,000,000.

The $2,048,196,000,000 that the federal government collected in tax dollars in the first six months of this fiscal year was only exceeded by the $2,236,043,500,000 (in constant March 2023 dollars) that the federal government collected in taxes in the first six months of fiscal 2022.

North Korea said it launched a new solid-fueled Hwasong-18 Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday (local time), according to state media KCNA on Friday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided the “first test launch of the new ICBM” and the launch had no “negative impact” to the safety of the neighboring countries, per KCNA. The missile also did a stage separation, it said.

Solid-fueled ICBMs are the state-of-the-art world standard, and can be moved more easily and launched quicker than a liquid-fueled rocket. The United States’ main ICBM, the Minuteman III, is powered by three solid-fueled rocket motors.

Vox Media’s left-wing, youth-focused news website NowThis is set to become an independent operation with funding from Accelerate Change, a nonprofit media group that has received significant support from Democrat-linked dark money donors.

NowThis, a brand with millions of followers across various topic–focused social media pages, will have its editorial and personnel operations independently managed, while Vox Media will hold minority ownership in tandem with Accelerate Change’s funding, Vox Media announced Wednesday. Accelerate Change got more than $2 million from the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Hopewell Fund in 2019 and $300,000 from the 501(c)(3) New Venture Fund from 2020 to 2021.

Accelerate Change says it works to “scale and invest in emergent and established cultural media properties,” and NowThis has developed a prominent presence in digital media.

NowThis is known for posting short, political videos on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with a significant portion of its content showing Republicans in a negative light or positively portraying Democrats. Some of the videos have garnered millions of views, and the NowThis TikTok team received the 2021 Shorty Impact Award for best social media team.

NowThis published a video clip in January 2020 that featured a George Washington University student saying Anne Frank “didn’t die in a concentration camp,” but subsequently removed it and reported that the student “misspoke,” according to the Jewish Journal. The Biden administration announced its latest home appliance regulations this week, targeting air conditioners in an action it said would reduce the nation’s carbon emissions.

The regulations, unveiled Thursday by the Department of Energy (DOE), finalize energy efficiency standards for home air conditioning units, or window air conditioners, and portable air cleaners. The DOE said the move would cut air pollution and push consumer costs down by billions of dollars via energy savings.

“Today’s announcement builds on the historic actions President Biden took last year to strengthen outdated energy efficiency standards, which will help save on people’s energy bills and reduce our nation’s carbon footprint,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement.

“DOE will continue to engage with our public and private sector partners to finalize additional proposals like today’s that lower household energy costs and deliver the safer, healthier communities that every American deserves,” she continued.

According to the DOE, the new energy efficiency standards will save Americans about $1.5 billion annually and curb carbon dioxide emissions by 106 million metric tons over three decades. The agency added that the regulations were part of President Biden’s efforts to promote innovation and lower costs for families “while tackling the climate crisis.”

The rules for air cleaners are scheduled to be implemented in 2024 and the rules for room air conditioners are slated for 2026.

House Republicans Set Hearing on Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s ‘Pro-Crime’ Policies

The House Judiciary Committee announced on April 10 it will hold a field hearing in New York City on April 17 to discuss Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, just weeks after the unprecedented indictment and arraignment of former President Donald Trump in Bragg’s district.

The hearing is titled “Victims of Violent Crime in Manhattan.”

Bragg has come under fire, mainly from conservatives and the GOP, for what those critics say are “soft on crime” policies. The hearing, according to the committee, “will examine how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for New York City residents.”

Bragg’s office has fired back at the scheduled hearing, calling it a “political stunt.”

“This hearing won’t engage in actual efforts to increase public safety, such as supporting national gun legislation and shutting down the iron pipeline,” a spokesperson for the office said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Shortly after taking office, Bragg issued a memo to his staffers stating that the district attorney’s office will not prosecute, among numerous offenses, marijuana misdemeanors, public transportation fare evasion, most trespassing violations, resisting arrest, and prostitution. Bragg also announced the downgrading of certain offenses including possession of a non-firearm weapon, both residential and commercial burglaries, and drug cases.

Republicans have pointed out the incongruence of Bragg’s leniency for these crimes versus his prosecution of Trump for allegedly falsifying business records.

Trump was arraigned on April 4 on a 34-count indictment, to which he pleaded not guilty, over his alleged role in the payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. On his social media site, Truth Social, Trump has called Bragg’s prosecution a “WITCH HUNT” and said that the district attorney should “INDICT HIMSELF.”

“The People of the State of New York allege that Donald J. Trump repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal crimes that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election,” said Bragg in a statement released by his office.

“Manhattan is home to the country’s most significant business market. We cannot allow New York businesses to manipulate their records to cover up criminal conduct,” he continued. “As the statement of facts describes, the trail of money and lies exposes a pattern that, the People allege, violates one of New York’s basic and fundamental business laws.

“As this office has done time and time again, we today uphold our solemn responsibility to ensure that everyone stands equal before the law.”

Thus it came as no real surprise when the regime blamed its catastrophic bungling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan on a man who wasn’t president when it happened. “President Biden’s choices for how to execute a withdrawal from Afghanistan were severely constrained by conditions created by his predecessor,” the White House claimed, and really, who else but Donald Trump could possibly be responsible, as this regime has already decided that he is the focus of evil in the modern world? But the facts, as always, are otherwise.

Trump spokesman Steven Cheung shot back: “Biden and his administration are trying to gaslight the American people for their disastrous withdrawal in Afghanistan that directly led to American deaths and emboldened the terrorists.” Exactly so. Emblematic of the mishandling of the entire withdrawal from Afghanistan was the fact that the Islamic State jihadist who murdered 13 American service members and numerous Afghans a suicide bombing at the Kabul airport in August 2021 had just been released from prison at Bagram Air Base, the center of American operations in Afghanistan until the U.S. precipitously and irresponsibly abandoned it in July of the same year. That release took place on Biden’s watch, at the orders of his military, which also ordered Marine snipers not to take out the same jihadist when they had him in their sights.

Al-Loghri had been held in the Parwan prison at Bagram Air Base, along with around 5,000 other prisoners, including several hundred members of ISIS, as well as Taliban and al-Qaeda jihadis. In July 2021, according to the Associated Press, “the U.S. left Afghanistan’s Bagram Airfield after nearly 20 years by shutting off the electricity and slipping away in the night without notifying the base’s new Afghan commander, who discovered the Americans’ departure more than two hours after they left.” Did Trump tell Biden’s handlers to do that?

Contrary to Biden’s claims that every contingency had been provided for, this was a catastrophe brought on by a lack of planning and foresight. On August 30, 2021, Rep. Jody Hice (R-Georgia) tweeted: “As the Afghan government fell, the Taliban gave US officials the option to take control of Kabul. They PASSED and instead opted to willingly surrender the city to the Taliban and control only the airport till 8/31! HOW MANY MORE COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED?!?”

We’ll never know. Yet before the disaster, the Biden regime assured us that it had matters well in hand. In June 2021, CENTCOM commander General Kenneth McKenzie gave an interview to Military Times in which he declared confidently: “We have workable plans to evacuate any scale of people that we would be directed to do. That’s one of the things that we have done. I’ve talked to the secretary about it.” Given the chaos of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, however, either no such plans ever really existed, or they were never implemented.

The military had other matters on its mind. In June 2021, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) questioned General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a Congressional hearing about an ongoing effort to saddle U.S. military personnel with mandatory readings and briefings on the topic of Critical Race Theory. Milley bristled at the question and answered: “I’ve read Mao Zedong. I’ve read Karl Marx. I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist.”

The general situated his interest as part of an investigation of the causes of the alleged January 6 alleged “insurrection,” taking for granted the highly tendentious assumption that the Capitol incident, and support for Trump in general, was rooted in “white supremacism”: “I want to understand white rage, and I’m white, and I want to understand it. So what is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? What caused that? I want to find that out.”

Milley and the rest of the woke military brass could have spent less time studying Critical Race Theory and imposing it on the troops as a way of weeding out Trump supporters from the ranks, and more time doing their actual jobs. Had they done so, they might have realized how foolish it was to steal away from Bagram in the dead of night. They could even have used the base as a rallying point for Americans in Afghanistan who wanted to leave the country, getting them out in a safe and orderly manner instead of the Saigon-on-steroids nightmare that a horrified world witnessed at Kabul airport in August.

Yet safe among his friends in Washington, who will ensure that he suffers no consequences for his disastrous errors of judgment, Milley is considered a brilliant strategist. Yet he learned nothing from the Afghanistan debacle. As Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Army officers were forced to sit through an official and mandatory presentation entitled “Policy on the Military Service of Transgender Persons and Persons with Gender Dysphoria.” According to the Washington Free Beacon, the presentation gives “training on gender pronouns and coaching officers on when to offer soldiers gender transition surgery.”

That’s what led to the Afghan catastrophe, not Donald Trump. Old Joe Biden will not escape the verdict of history.

“Joe Biden committed crimes in Ukraine in a conspiracy with [current national security adviser] Jake Sullivan,” McCormick said.

“I’m a witness to that happening.”

But to get to your exact question, there is a small U.S. military presence at the embassy in conjunction with the Defense Attachés office to help us work on accountability of the material that is going in and out of Ukraine,” Kirby said, referencing the weapons and other support the U.S. has been sending to Kyiv. “So they’re attached to that embassy and to that the defense attache.”
