Kamala Harris to tour Florida's blood-stained Parkland school building

As part of the Biden administration's focus on gun violence in the U.S. amid the president's race for a second term in the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled for a highly anticipated tour of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the site of the 2018 shooting where 17 people were murdered.

Vice President Harris was expected to meet with families of victims and walk through the halls and tour classrooms in a school where blood still stains some areas where the massacre happened.

In July of last year, Court TV was there when victims' families got a first look inside the school after the shooting. Those private visits for shooting survivors and the families of the victims started on July 5, inside the building where the gunman killed 17 and injured another 17 on Valentine's Day in 2018.

On Saturday, Vice President Harris was expected to focus on how the administration plans to address gun violence.

Those touring the school with the vice president will also include U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz, State Attorney Harold Pryor, and members of the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, the White House said.

Vice President Harris will announce the launch of a new resource center focused on the implementation of red flag laws called the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center. The White House said it's the first of its kind.

Also expected is a call to urge states to pass and implement similar legislation including red flag laws, and to urge the use of federal funding including $750 million for state crisis intervention programs.

Combating gun violence has been one of the top priorities expressed by the Biden administration. Last year the White House announced the creation of the Office on Gun Violence Prevention which would be overseen by Vice President Harris as part of the administration's work to reduce gun violence.

President Joe Biden has called on Congress for further action to find a way to lessen gun violence, including a push to try and ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines; and by passing universal background checks.

As Scripps News' Haley Bull noted on Saturday while at the school, the freshman building of the high school has been preserved as evidence since the shooting happened on Feb. 14, 2018. That is the area where 14 of the students and three staff members were killed.

In 2022, during the penalty phased of the trial, a jury viewing was carried out in the 1200 building of the school's campus where a small number of journalists were allowed to view the area. Valentine's Day flowers, essays, writings, books and other details that were left seemingly frozen in time after the deadly shooting still remained in place, according to jury notes.

The 17 people killed at the school included, Alyssa Alhadeff, a teacher named Scott Beigel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, a foodball coach named Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Athletic Director Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. Each of their families told of how they were great siblings; sons and daughters, some mothers and fathers. Their families loved them deeply and still advocate for measures to quell gun violence in the United States so that other families don't have to experience the same grief and pain.

The building is scheduled to be demolished in the summer of 2024, according to Broward Schools

In 2022, Lori Jane Gliha reported on federal funds that were expected at the time to be used to pass red flag laws, and how states were dealing with gun violence. In Denver, police used Colorado's red flag laws to prohibit potentially dangerous individuals from gaining possession of firearms. Under the state's law, a judge can grant an Extreme Risk Protection Order to temporarily block possession of firearms if the judge believes a person poses a danger to themselves or others.

New York’s Shoplifting Epidemic Creating Shadow ‘Resale Economy’ as Businesses Lose Billions

GatewayPundit - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 16:40

New York’s shoplifting epidemic is now so severe that a shadow “resale economy” has formed across online marketplaces.

According to a report from The New York Post, some of the city’s most notorious thieves are hawking products at a discount prices on services such as Facebook and eBay. Organized gangs are even providing their underlings “shopping lists” of the specific items they want stolen.

In some cases, thieves even stealing perishable items such as expensive ice cream before selling them on for profit to people at subway stations or local bodegas.

One law enforcement source told the Post:

They get shopping lists for items that include cellphones, power tools, handbags… They bring stolen goods to [illicit] wholesalers in the five boroughs.

Members of the booster crew get their cash. Then the dealer, if you will, distributes them through his own network, via storefronts, if he has them, or he puts them online and sells to consumers through Facebook Marketplace.

Last month, New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul touted her efforts to try and crack down on the issue, which is costing local businesses a staggering $4.4 billion every year.

Among her proposals included the creation of  a state police team to prosecute organized theft rings and greater surveillance systems for the resale of stolen goods.

“What we are focused on is what has become a sophisticated organized retail operation, the smash-and-grab efforts,” she said at the time. “They go in and swipe everything off the shelves.”

Shoplifting across New York City has skyrocketed in recent years, rising 64 percent between June 2019 and June 2023, according to the Council on Criminal Justice. This is above even the 61 percent jump seen in Los Angeles, where shoplifting is effectively decriminliazed.

Special Election For McCarthy Seat Heads For A May Runoff With Trump Endorsed Candidate

With all the drama these days, let’s not forget that the special election is coming.

It will be a two-man race between Republicans Vince Fong and Mike Boudreaux in a May runoff for the seat that former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy vacated.

A special election that will give the winner a significant advantage in the second round of the general election.

This fall, Fong and Boudreaux will have the opportunity to present themselves as incumbent members of Congress, which will give them a considerable advantage in November.

Politico reports,

Fong, a state legislator, has emerged as the clear front-runner. He rode endorsements from McCarthy — his one-time boss — former President Donald Trump and California GOP House members to first-place finishes in both the March primary and the subsequent special election with over 40 percent of the vote.

Boudreaux, the Tulare County sheriff, has aligned local support and channeled skepticism of the Republican machine that propelled the careers of both McCarthy and Fong. He secured about a quarter of the vote in both March elections and could increase his share in the May runoff if he consolidates Republicans who did not back Fong.

Another candidate, GOP businessperson Kyle Kirkland, threw his support behind Boudreaux after losing.

McCarthy’s abrupt resignation last December set off a Republican scramble to claim his Bakersfield-area seat. It also created a complex political shuffle: Voters had to select someone to fill the vacancy — the aim of Tuesday’s special election — as well as a candidate for the next two-year term.

According to a seperate Associated Press report, Trump endorsed Fong in February. Boudreaux has the support of former acting director of national intelligence Ric Grenell and Republican state Sen. Shannon Grove of Bakersfield.

Because of Trump’s involvement, the race is being watched as a possible proxy vote on the former president’s clout as he heads toward an all-but-certain matchup against President Joe Biden in November.

McCarthy’s dramatic fall in the House — he is the only speaker in history to be voted out of the job — left behind a messy race to succeed him that has included an ongoing lawsuit and exposed rivalries within the GOP.

Republicans occupy only 11 of the state’s 52 House seats, with the one held by McCarthy currently vacant.

California Synagogue Leases Space to Mosque to ‘Ease Tensions,’ Mosque Then Features Pro-Hamas Speaker

Geller Report - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 16:00

Hamakom synagogue, a conservative congregation in Los Angeles, has just gotten a bracing introduction to the reality beneath the surface of efforts at “outreach” and “dialogue”: it leased its facility to a local Muslim group, only to have it host a viciously anti-Israel speaker who has refused to condemn Hamas and likened the Jewish state to National Socialist Germany. Yeah, tensions are really eased now.

The Washington Free Beacon reported Monday that Hamakom “axed its leadership and is struggling to retain members” after leasing its main facility to the Islamic Society of West Valley. The synagogue “entered into an agreement with the Islamic Society that allowed it to take over the synagogue’s main campus, pushing Jewish members onto a smaller satellite branch.

The synagogue leadership did this in the hopes it would build bridges with Muslims in Los Angeles: “In this time of rising anti-Semitism and Islamophobia,” synagogue leaders told the congregation, “it is incumbent upon us to reach out to strengthen the bonds between religious communities in our neighborhood, recognizing there is more that unites us than divides us.” Almost immediately, however, their starry-eyed hopes of bridging the gap of centuries of hatred and suspicion, and showing the Muslims of Los Angeles that Jews weren’t really “the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe,” as the Qur’an says (5:82), were dashed.

Yet Hamakon gave its all to this effort. The synagogue leadership allowed the Muslims to use the building every night, while the Jews themselves “would only be allowed to worship in two rooms from 8 p.m. to midnight. Evening programs and Friday night Sabbath services were also relocated to a smaller site also owned by the synagogue.” Even worse, “in anticipation of the lease’s commencement, the synagogue’s leadership covered up pictures of Israeli hostages captured by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel.”

Yes, you read that right. It wasn’t the mosque that covered up the pictures of Israeli hostages. It was the synagogue leadership, showing that they were so avid to build bridges with the Muslim group that they were willing to abandon their own principles and basic standards of human decency to do so.

The Islamic Society of West Valley, in contrast, was not so eager to abandon its own beliefs in order to make friends with the Jews. “Soon after the Islamic Society began using Hamakom’s facility, it hosted anti-Israel activist Hussam Ayloush, who said last year that Israel did not have a right to defend itself following the Oct. 7 attack and compared Israel to Nazi Germany.” Even worse, years ago I myself was on a radio show with Ayloush, the top dog of the Los Angeles chapter of the the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). I repeatedly challenged him to condemn Hamas and Hizballah. He steadfastly refused.

The Ayloush appearance led to outrage among members of the synagogue, with the anger growing so great that Hamakom ultimately severed its arrangement with the Islamic Society. The leaders of the synagogue have resigned, and Hamakom is promising a “thorough internal review to understand the missteps taken and to implement corrective measures.”

That’s great, but it’s unlikely that this internal review is going to be deep or honest enough to uncover the real problem. Jews in Los Angeles (and elsewhere, of course) have been reaching out to Muslims for years, without any reciprocal action from the Muslims. As far back as 2012, the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles canceled a speech by human rights activist Pamela Geller; Geller remarked that the Federation had “cravenly submitted to Islamic supremacists who wanted to suppress free speech.”

Indeed. In its story on the cancellation, the Los Angeles Times quoted none other than Hussam Ayloush, who said all the things that he knew the leftist Times and its equally leftist audience would want to hear. Geller, he claimed, was a “fringe speaker.” He added: “We will not be affected by the noise of people who hopefully become more and more irrelevant. Unfortunately, outrageous rhetoric gets attention because it’s outrageous, and Pamela Geller knows that very well.”

The “outrageous rhetoric” to which Ayloush referred had to do with Geller sounding the alarm about the necessity of awakening to the reality of Islamic jihad. Meanwhile, here is some genuinely outrageous rhetoric: “For 75 years, every single day for the Palestinian people had been October 7.” Let’s see. In 1950, the population of Gaza was 63,444. Now it is estimated to be over 800,000. Have the Israelis really been going into Gaza and carrying out orgies of murder and rape every day for 75 years? Hamas jihadis murdered 1,200 people on Oct. 7, 2023. If Israel did the same thing every day in Gaza, 32,850,000 people would have been killed.

Who made this preposterous and incendiary claim? Hussam Ayloush. Ayloush was speaking at the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City, and clearly was trying to stir up his hearers to hate Israel and be willing to support the jihad against it. Ayloush isn’t interested in building bridges; he is interested in blowing them up (figuratively!).

Or if he is interested in outreach, it is in order to bring people to Islam. “Building bridges” is also a frequently enunciated goal of CAIR. Such bridges, however, are really just proselytizing mechanisms to convert the Christians to Islam, not an attempt to engage in genuine dialogue — as the Muslim Brotherhood theorist Sayyid Qutb explained: “The chasm between Islam and Jahiliyyah [the society of unbelievers] is great, and a bridge is not to be built across it so that the people on the two sides may mix with each other, but only so that the people of Jahiliyyah may come over to Islam.”

So on the one side, we have a coarse and brutish propagandist spreading blood libels against the Jews. On the other side, we have leftist Jews so anxious to be friendly to Muslims that they give over their premises to a mosque that brings in this same hateful propagandist to speak. What’s wrong with this picture? If leftist Jews in Los Angeles had listened to what Pamela Geller was trying to tell them in 2012, they wouldn’t be in this fix.
