Orthodox Jews say they were excluded from White House hate-crimes summit

By Steven Nelson, NY Post, September 20, 2022:

The Rev. Al Sharpton requested the summit after the May massacre of 10 black shoppers in Buffalo, and it brought together hundreds of activists and community leaders from minority groups. But Orthodox Jews, who suffer a large number of hate crimes, struggled to make the cut.

Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce CEO Duvi Honig told The Post he tried to RSVP, contacting three Biden staffers and even brandishing an endorsement from the New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s office to be honored as a Uniter — an award bestowed to 16 people at the event.

He didn’t hear back.

“The question is, is [Biden] punishing the Orthodox community for supporting [former President Donald] Trump? Regardless, my concern is as we’re going into the high holy holidays, would people read that Orthodox Jew attacks aren’t recognized by the White House? Because that encourages people to continue to be more aggressive” Honig said.

“The White House used hate. They used us, our blood — they used our DNA of Jews being persecuted and attacked daily as an excuse to make an event and didn’t include Orthodox Jews, who were the number one [target of] hate and antisemitism,” Honig said.
Some Orthodox Jewish leaders have criticized the Biden administration for not inviting them to the “United We Stand” summit about hate-crimes and antisemitism at the White House last week.

At least one Orthodox Jew was admitted to the hundreds-strong gathering — Nathan Diament of the Orthodox Union — but Honig said it wasn’t enough. “One person trickled in!” he said dismissively, adding that it would have been more appropriate to invite a New York-area member of the community, given the group’s center of population and epicenter of victimization.

Roughly 800 of about 2,700 antisemitic incidents in 2021 — or nearly one third of them — occurred in New Jersey or New York.

“They didn’t recognize any Orthodox Jew as a Uniter purposely, which stands out while then recogniz[ing] Islamic, Reform [Jews], [Christian leaders] and so on,” said Honig, whose group seeks to build economic bridges between communities. “Our community’s leaders from the various large communities of Orthodox sectors where daily attacks accrue were missing [from] the summit and not invited.”

Honig said that he believes Reform Jews, who were better represented at the summit, are less likely to experience hate crimes because they don’t wear the conspicuous attire of many Orthodox Jews. “We were used and stepped on and spit out. There’s just no better way to say it than you’re making a wedding and you’re not inviting the bride and groom — you just wanted a party,” he said.

A group of four Orthodox Jewish journalists from Ami magazine led by reporter Jake Turx also were barred from the summit’s primary attraction: a speech by Biden in the nearly 3,000 square foot East Room.

Although the four journalists submitted electronic RSVPs, they were each told “spacing constraints” meant they couldn’t join a crowd of other reporters selected via a mysterious prescreening process, which the Biden press office recently eased after a press corps revolt.

The Orthodox reporters pleaded with staffers including press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre before the event — and were assisted in a valiant last-minute effort by a Jewish press staffer — but ultimately were left covering the event from the White House driveway rather than the indoor venue with Biden.

It’s unclear who assembled the guest list for the summit or the list of reporters allowed into it.

A White House official told The Post that there was a reporter allowed into the room from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, and that in addition to Orthodox Union leader Diament, several other non-Orthodox Jews participated in the summit. The union’s vice president, Moshe Hauer, was invited but wasn’t able to attend.
Four Orthodox Jewish journalists from Ami magazine were not allowed into Biden’s speech in the East Room due to “spacing constraints.”

Joseph Borgen, a New Yorker attacked last year while wearing a yarmulke, was included in a “survivors” panel at the summit.

During his remarks, Biden said he decided to run for president after hearing the “antisemitic bile” of white supremacists during 2017 racial clashes in Charlottesville, and said that there’s a “through line” of deeply ingrained prejudice in US society.

“Unfortunately, such hate-fueled violence and threats are not new to America,” Biden said. “There is a through-line of hate from massacres of Indigenous people, to the original sin of slavery, the terror of the Klan, to anti-immigration violence against the Irish, Italians, Chinese, Mexicans, and so many others laced throughout our history.

“There is a through-line of violence against religious groups: antisemitic, anti-Catholic, anti-Mormon, anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, anti-Sikh.”

Antisemitic hate crime victim Joseph Borgen was invited to speak on a panel at the summit.

New California Law Legalizes Human Composting

‘Climate Emergency’ Is a Hoax, International Study Finds

California Will Allow Human Composting After Death to Combat Climate Change

By: Paul Bois, Breitbart, September 22, 2022:

The far-left state of California further embraced neo-paganism this week when Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law allowing the practice of composting dead human beings to better combat climate change.

Citing the high CO2 emissions associated with cremation, the bill will give people the option to give their dead remains over to a process known as natural organic reduction (NOR) should they not want to be buried or cremated.

“The process involves placing the body inside a long, reusable steel container along with wood chips and flowers to aerate it – allowing microbes and bacteria to break down the remains,” according to the Daily Mail. “One month later, the remains will fully decompose and be turned into soil.”

The act of cremation reportedly accounts for 360,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.

California Democrat Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, who authored the bill, praised NOR as a “more environmentally friendly” practice that will give people more options for their desired burial. She wrote:

With climate change and sea-level rise as very real threats to our environment, this is an alternative method of final disposition that won’t contribute emissions into our atmosphere. I look forward to continuing my legacy to fight for clean air by using my reduced remains to plant a tree.

The bill will make it illegal to combine human remains without permission or unless the two are related. It will also be illegal to sell the soil or use it for agricultural purposes.

The Catholic Church strongly opposes the practice of NOR, charging it was meant for livestock.

“NOR uses essentially the same process as a home gardening composting system,” Kathleen Domingo, executive director of the California Catholic Conference, told SFGATE. She added:

These methods of disposal were used to lessen the possibility of disease being transmitted by the dead carcass. Using these same methods for the ‘transformation’ of human remains can create an unfortunate spiritual, emotional and psychological distancing from the deceased.

The law will not take effect until 2027 and follows the states of Washington, Colorado, and Oregon.

New York Congressman Lee Zeldin has come under fire from a leading Muslim rights organisation after attacking the Muslim American official tapped to lead a probe into a complaint of antisemitism at a university in New York City.

Saly Abd Alla, a former civil rights director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations' (CAIR) chapter in Minnesota, was chosen to lead an investigation into a complaint of antisemitism made by a CUNY Kingsborough Community College professor.

Abd Allah is the chief diversity officer at CUNY. After the news that she would be leading the investigation, Republican Councilperson Inna Vernikov accused her of being linked to antisemitism and terrorism.

Imam Omar Suleiman targeted in US smear campaign led by Republican congressman

Zeldin, a Republican from New York and co-chair of the House Republicans' Israel Caucus, joined the attacks and said both the CUNY employee and CAIR were "pro-Hamas" and "antisemitic".

"CAIR’s leadership has a long history of spreading antisemitic conspiracies and pro-Hamas propaganda," Zeldin said.

CAIR National and its New York branch responded to Zeldin's statement, saying his "decision to launch a vile, defamatory and Islamophobic attack against a Muslim woman because she once worked for our civil rights organization is shameful".

"Mr. Zeldin, a poodle for Donald Trump with a history of smearing Muslim women, has reached a new low and sullied his office."

Zeldin has a history of attacking Muslim leaders in the US. In 2019, after prominent American imam Omar Suleiman delivered a prayer at the opening of a session at the US House of Representatives, Zeldin launched a scathing rebuke of the speech, followed by a flurry of articles that accused Suleiman of being "militantly anti-Semitic".

At the time, Suleiman told MEE that the articles springing up in quick succession was "clearly part of an attempt to erase Muslim leaders from public life and also to keep deflecting from the real anti-Semitism of the right".

Earlier this year, Vernikov, a Ukrainian-born Jewish Republican representing parts of Brooklyn, was able to block $50,000 in CUNY's funding after claiming that professors at its School of Law were engaging in antisemitism following a decision to support the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In a statement, Vernikov claimed CUNY, which enrolled more than 260,000 students in 2020, was rife with "antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment".

Students at the university condemned the decision, telling MEE they experienced no such antisemitism on campus, despite Vernikov's claims. The funding the councilwoman blocked had been due to go towards providing free legal services to the local community.

Zeldin himself introduced a bill in March this year targeting the BDS movement in the US. The bill, if passed, would bar US citizens and companies from providing information to foreign countries and international organisations that "have the effect of furthering" the boycott of Israel.

It would also bar the US from participating in boycotts, or requests for boycotts, of "a country which is friendly to the United States".

Middle East Eye reached out to Abd Alla for comment but did not receive a response by time of publication.
